EARLY TREATMENT
When is the best time to begin orthodontics?
Though an orthodontist can enhance a smile at any age, there is an optimal time period to begin treatment. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the initial orthodontic evaluation should occur at the first sign of orthodontic problems or no later than age 7. At this early age, orthodontic treatment may not be necessary, but a comprehensive examination can anticipate the most advantageous time to begin treatment.
Why is age 7 the optimal time for screening?
A Good Rule of Thumb: At age 7, whether an orthodontic problem is detected or not, a child should visit an orthodontist for a check-up. This may surprise you since orthodontics is usually associated with adolescence and teen years. But braces for kids are not uncommon and can also have psychosocial benefits if the child’s teeth are very crooked or crowded and he / she is experiencing teasing or bullying.
Your child may need an orthodontic exam if any of the following warning signs are present:
-
Difficulty in chewing or biting
-
Grinding of teeth, especially at night
-
Mouth breathing
-
Finger sucking or other oral habits
-
Crowding, misplaced or blocked teeth
-
Jaw shifting or clicking
ADULT TREATMENT
It’s never too late to achieve a beautiful, healthy smile through orthodontics. There are many options available today that can give you the smile that you want and deserve while maintaining optimal esthetics. Many of our adult patients are opting for our clear, esthetic braces, which are much less visible than the traditional metal appliances. Another option available depending on your malocclusion is, ClearCorrect, the invisible way to straighten teeth without braces. Clear aligners are comfortable, low profile, custom-made clear plastic trays that most people don’t even know you are wearing. As your teeth change and your smile improves, you will change aligners regularly, wearing them for 20-22 hours a day.
Some adult treatment may require multi -specialities such as periodontics, cosmetic dentistry and oral surgery in order to achieve the best result for function, estethetics and most importantly dental health. Dr. Baurmash is comfortable working with other dental professionals and will help guide you through the process.
